One application is to examine shotgun cartridges for the presence of pellets made of lead. First the paper strip is folded around the pellet in question. Then the paper with pellet is taken between the jaws of a needle-nose pliers (see photograph) and pressed firmly for a short time.
 
The residue on the test strip is then moistened with a 1% aqueous solution of tartaric acid. Lead pellets will show a pink to red coloration on the paper.
