Gentian Violet is a staining solution that contains the dye Crystal Violet. Crystal Violet can be absorbed by the fatty constituents in a fingerprint, thereby coloring it purple. It is primarily used to detect prints on the adhesive side of tapes, labels etc. The color of the stained print is often quite faint.
Gentian violet is easy to use, but because of the presence of phenol (poisonous!) in the solution, it should be handled very carefully with suitable gloves and protective clothing. Phenol can be absorbed through the skin, even from dilute solutions. Spilled solution and waste should therefore be handled with caution.
Gentian Violet is supplied as a concentrated, ethanol-based solution that must be diluted before use with water (15-30 times).
